SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball team fell twice to Portland State this afternoon, both games by 1-0 scores at Marsalli Park. The Broncos fall to 10-19 on the season while the Vikings improve to 7-14.
Portland State opened the first game with a double by left fielder Kiauna Anderson. Center fielder Summer Conroy followed with a single to advance Anderson to third. Short stop Vanessa Applegate grounded out to third base brining catcher Gina Papasadero to the plate. Her bunt advanced Conroy to third, although Anderson was out at home. Conroy stole home on the next pitch to bring in the Vikings' only run of the game.
Senior pitcher Krista Barry took the loss for the Broncos, falling to 6-8 on the year, allowing six hits. Morgan Seibert improved her record to 5-7 on the PSU season, allowing only one Bronco hit, to junior outfielder Sydney Wiginton in the first.
Anderson started the second game with another double but was not able to score in the inning, and became the first of 12 runners the Vikings left on base in the second game. In fact, SCU escaped bases-loaded situations in the second, fifth and seventh innings.
Portland State's Vanessa Applegate scored in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Erin Newlean. Applegate reached base on a double down the right field line that deflected off of Bronco third baseman Marin Hawkins' glove.
Santa Clara scattered four hits through the rest of the game--including two more by Wiginton--but was unable to score.
Junior pitcher Deanna Rodriguez takes the loss for the Broncos and falls to 4-10 on the season. PSU's Nichole Ivie improves to 2-5.
On the afternoon, Portland State outhit Santa Clara 15-5. Neither team committed an error in either contest.
The Broncos remain at home and will host Oregon in a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 1 p.m.
