SAN FRANCISCO - The Santa Clara University women's tennis team defeated San Francisco 5-2 in West Coast Conference action this afternoon at the Golden Gate Park courts in San Francisco. The Broncos improve to 8-7 on the season, 4-1 in league play, while the Dons fall to 4-13.

"Today's match could have gone either way," SCU head coach Aby Ryan said. "I wouldn't say it was our best day, but we stayed competitive and it was a good win for us. They'll be just as tough in a few weeks at the conference tournament."

San Francisco took the doubles point with victories on the second and third courts. Santa Clara avoided the sweep with Christine Limbers and Janalle Kaloi's 8-3 win over Gabi Ruiz and Anna Skogerboe in the top slot.

In singles, it took just over an hour for the Broncos to earn a 2-1 match advantage, as Limbers and Kaloi, on courts one and two respectively, did not cede a single game in the first set en route to victories. Senior Mariko Kawakami did the same, and added to the Bronco lead with her 6-0, 6-3 victory over Gillian Rader on court six.

Needing just one more victory to clinch the match, Catherine Cochrane and Casey Knutson took their contests to three sets. Cochrane clinched the victory for the Broncos with her 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 win over Carey Savage.

The Broncos will remain on the road and close out the regular season next weekend in Fresno. The Broncos will play Northern Arizona on Friday, Idaho on Saturday and the Bulldogs on Sunday.
