Making a Splash as a Freshman

Making a Splash as a Freshman

By: Gabe Taylor '12

In her first year suiting up as a Bronco on the women's water polo team, Ashleigh Bandimere (AB) started in 22 of the 36 games, recorded 35 goals and 16 steals, and topped it all off with being named the WWPA Newcomer of the Year. When the WWPA Tournament came around, the California native proved that youth would not negate her ability to be clutch, as she netted goals in all three games. Bandimere caught up with SantaClaraBroncos.com (SCB) to reflect on her accomplishments in her first year on Mission Campus.

SCB: What was it like being names the WWPA Newcomer of the Year? Did you expect you would get it?

AB: It was a huge surprise and I was very honored.

SCB: Was there anything specific that really helped you excel right from the get-go?

AB: My high school water polo coach prepared me really well for making the transition to college water polo.

SCB: You tallied 35 goals on the season. How satisfied are you with those numbers/personal stats?

AB: Although I'm very pleased with my performance this year, I believe there is always room for improvement.

SCB: What is your favorite memory from this season in the water?

AB: My favorite memory of the season is our last game at the WWPA Championships against Sonoma State University. We came back from trailing by a few goals to win in sudden death. I thought it was the best game our team played collectively all year and it was an extremely exciting way to end the season.

SCB: What has been your favorite part about being at Santa Clara now that your freshman year's winding down?

AB: My favorite part about being at Santa Clara has been meeting all kinds of new people.

SCB: What will you work on most in the offseason, in preparation for your sophomore season?

AB: I plan on working on my speed and strength in the pool and growing as a defensive player.
