FULLERTON, Calif. - Alex Rivers pitched his fourth complete game of the year, limiting No. 9 Cal State Fullerton to one run over the final five innings but the Titans claimed their second-straight over visiting Santa Clara, edging the Broncos 6-4 Saturday night at Goodwin Field.
Santa Clara (21-29) fought back from a 5-1 deficit, pulling within one at 5-4 on Tommy Medica's RBI-sac fly in the seventh inning. Ian O'Connor, Ryan Rieger and Evan Peters each doubled for the Broncos who totaled 10 hits.
Cal State Fullerton (36-15) generated early offense, scoring three runs in the first inning after its first four batters reached safely off Rivers (5-8). Corey Jones tripled, went 3-for-4 with three RBI. The Titans collected 14 hits, seven coming in the first three innings.
Six-foot four-inch righty Daniel Renken improved to 10-2. He struckout five in eight innings before Nick Ramirez appeared in the ninth to claim his eighth save. The Titans won the series-opener 8-0 Friday night. The three-game set concludes Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
