SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University junior outfielder Tommy Medica was named a 2010 `Louisville Slugger' NCAA Division I All-American by Collegiate Baseball. Medica finished the year batting .386 with 13 homeruns and 21 doubles, firmly establishing himself as one of the most accomplished players in Santa Clara history.
A native of San Jose and graduate of Bellarmine College Prep, Medica needed just three full seasons to rank sixth all-time at SCU in hits (329). Batting third in the lineup and starting in all 54 games as a junior, Medica's 2010 totals rank among the best single-season numbers in SCU's 125-year baseball history: 67 RBI, (T4th), 88 hits (T5th), 60 runs (T6th), 21 doubles (T6th), 152 total bases (6th), 13 homers (T8th), .667 slugging % (10th).
His career batting average (.369) ranks second all-time at Santa Clara. He was named a 'Louisville Slugger' Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball in 2007 and played for the USA National Team later that summer at the 2007 Pan-American Games. After an All-West Coast Conference First Team season in 2008, he sat out the majority of the 2009 season with injury.
As a redshirt junior in 2010, Medica was named an All-WCC First Team player for the third time, leading the conference in RBI (67), runs (60) and total bases (152). He was named the WCC 'Player of the Month' for March after hitting .403 (31-for-77), reaching safely in all 17 games (10 wins), collecting 12 extra-base hits, including five homers and six doubles. Medica went on a 21-game hitting streak from March 6 through April 9 - the second longest streak in the nation at the time.
He finished the season by going 9-of-17 (.411 BA) with 11 RBI in SCU's last four games, hitting three doubles and a homerun. Medica is expected to be selected in the upcoming MLB First Year Player Draft which begins on Monday, June 7.
