Former Bronco Tommy Medica Called Up to the Show by Padres

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Former Bronco baseball standout Tommy Medica has been promoted to the big leagues for the first time in his career. Medica got the call from the San Diego Padres late Sunday night and the move was made official Tuesday. He was selected by the Padres in the 14th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

"We're really excited for Tommy," said Santa Clara head coach Dan O'Brien. "He's been playing great and deserves this opportunity. We weren't here when he was on campus but we've enjoyed hearing stories about how great he was for the program. We wish him all the best."

Medica has hit .296 across two levels this season. He his .294 in the Arizona League (R) and .296 in the Texas League (AA). He has 20 home runs, 65 RBI, 54 runs scored, a .370 on-base percentage, and a .593 slugging percentage.

In his minor league career Medica is a .295 hitter with 49 home runs and 205 RBI while scoring 177 runs in 300 games. He also has posted a .388 OBP and .538 SLG as a 1B/DH.

Medica played in 108 games as a Bronco and started 105 while hitting .361, the third-best in Santa Clara history. He posted a .439 OBP and a .522 SLG while hitting eight home runs, 31 doubles and six triples. Medica scored 84 runs and drove in 71.

His college honors included being named 2007-08 First-Team All-West Coast Conference, 2007 Collegiate Baseball Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, 2007 All-WCC Freshman Team and winning the 2007 WCC batting title (.373). He was also a member of the USA National Team for the 2007 Pan-American Games and was named All-Cap Cod League in 2008.

Medica attended high school at Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose, Calif. where he led the Bells to a CCS title as a senior and was named the West Catholic Athletic League MVP the same year.
