Today, Bronco baseball announces the eighth member of its incoming class of freshman for 2014-15, Grant Meylan. The outfielder currently attends Clayton Valley Charter High School in Concord, Calif., about one hour north of the Mission Campus.

"I fell in love with the campus as soon as I walked on, and the baseball field is amazing," Meylan said. "The coaches were incredibly nice and I'm excited to work as hard as I can for them."

In 2013, Meylan posted a .526 batting average and a .640 on-base percentage for head coach Casey Coakley and the Clayton Valley Charter Ugly Eagles on his way to First Team All-Diablo Valley Athletic League honors. The Ugly Eagles finished 22-5 (11-1 DVAL) last season, allowed more than two runs just five times in 27 games and reached the semifinals of the 16-team North Coast Section Baseball Tournament.

Meylan was named to the 2013 All-Bay Area World Series First Team and earned the event's Most Outstanding Defender award. The 6-foot, 165-pound prospect hit .478 with a .584 on-base percentage as a sophomore in 2012 in split time between the junior varsity and varsity teams. Meylan and the 2011 freshman team at CVCHS notched a perfect 23-0 record.

Outside of baseball, he also plays on the high school water polo team, and scored a combined 74 goals between his junior and senior seasons.

"Grant was the first guy that committed to us in the 2014 class, and right from the get-go, we knew he was going to make a great Bronco," pitching coach/recruiting coordinator Gabe Ribas said. "Grant plays with an old-school toughness and hustle that you just can't teach. He has exceptional hand-eye coordination at the plate and believes he can catch any ball that is hit to the outfield. His personality and family pedigree make him exactly what we were looking for from a guy who could start in center field for us right away."

The future Bronco hails from a family of athletes: mother Deborah caught for Saint Mary's softball, great uncle Jim McAnany won the 1959 World Series as a centerfielder with the Chicago White Sox, uncle John Arata played volleyball at UC Irvine, second cousin Michelle McAnany was a four-time All-American for CSU Northridge softball, second cousin Tim Layana pitched for Loyola Marymount and the Cincinnati Reds and cousins Chris, Keith and Dan Malloy are professional surfers.

Meylan is a member of the Public Service Academy and his hobbies consist of baseball, water polo, skiing, music, friends, and making GoPro movies. He intends to study business at Santa Clara.

"The academic side of the school is also a big plus becasue of the strong business degrees offered," Meylan said. "I am excited to be a Bronco, and can't wait to play baseball for this amazing school."
