SEASON PREVIEW

NOTES

  • The Broncos are playing the first of 18 games at home, which includes a stretch of nine-straight home contests in the month of November. Santa Clara opens with back-to-back home games before heading to Utah State and then the Bahamas for the Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship.
  • Santa Clara is coming off one of their most successful seasons in recent history. The Broncos finished third in the WCC with a 10-5 record - their best finish in conference play since 2006-07, and were 21-12 overall giving SCU their most wins of the Sendek Era and the most for the program since 2012-13.
  • The Broncos were selected to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) - their first postseason tournament appearance since 1996.
  • Other highlights from last season include the Broncos' landmark victories over No. 22 Saint Mary's and BYU
  • The Broncos roster features a nice mix of new and old faces. Keshawn Justice, a preseason All-WCC selection, is back for year No. 5 with the program after leading the team in rebounding (6.7) and double-doubles (8), and was sixth in the WCC in 3-point shooting at 42.3 percent. Big men Jaden Bediako and Parker Braun also return for their senior seasons. Each had a significant impact on last season's success with Bediako filling in for an injured Josip Vrankic to start seven games at forward, and Braun starting 32-of-33 games at center. Also returning are guards Carlos Stewart (33 appearances) and Giordan Williams (33 appearances), and forwards Jacob Holt (21 appearances) and Camaron Tongue (19 appearances).
  • SCU signed five newcomers, including transfers Brandin Podziemski (Illinois) and Carlos Marshall, Jr. (Tennessee State), and three freshmen (Kosy Akametu, Jake Ensminger and Christoph Tilly). Brenton Knapper, who redshirted last season, is also set to make his collegiate debut this year.
  • For the first time in program history, Santa Clara has a pair of Gatorade State Players of the Year on their current roster - sophomores Carlos Stewart (Louisiana) and Brandin Podziemski (Wisconsin).
  • Like many teams, Santa Clara took advantage of the offseason by going on an overseas excursion for a 10-day trip full of team bonding, sightseeing and basketball. The Broncos had extended stays in the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, Spain, as well as Paris, France. Santa Clara played a game in each city, finishing with a 2-1 record. SCU defeated Baloncesto Estudiantes, 77-63, in Madrid and took down Joventut, 65-57, in Barcelona before falling to the tremendously talented Paris Basketball, 122-88.
