SAN JOSE, Calif. - Junior Michael Nicoletti drained a 30-foot putt on his final hole to secure individual medalist honors at the Santa Clara University Invitational, hosted by the Broncos at Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose. Today also happens to be Nicoletti's 21st birthday.
Nicoletti earned the victory with a one-under-par 71 today to add to his even-par scores in yesterday's two rounds. He was the only participant to finish with a three-round total under par, and he bested Sacramento State's Brian Little by two strokes. UCLA's Brandon Christianson was competing as an individual and placed third with a 221.
"It was a little wet out there, but we had a fun time," Nicoletti said in his victory speech, referring to the intermittent rain that came today. "Thank you to everybody who came out to support us."
Santa Clara played two squads at this event. Santa Clara Red carded a 20-over-par 295-293-296--884 to win the tournament, which was played on a par-72, 6,926-yard layout. The team competing as Santa Clara White carded a 46-over-par 301-316-293--910 to move up one spot on the final day of action and place fifth. Holy Names placed second, 10 strokes off the Bronco Red pace. West Coast Conference programs Portland and Gonzaga followed in third and fourth place, respectively. Sacramento State, Loyola Marymount and Idaho State rounded out the placing for the eight-team field.
"It is with great pride that I get to present trophies to my own team," SCU head coach and tournament host John Kennaday said after his squad's second straight victory at this event. "We had tough conditions and everybody persevered."
Jong Yoon tied for fourth with his 222 total, while Jonathan Edwards and Kellen Moss tied for 10th place with 224s. John Colyar finished in 16th, and top-25 finishes were also recorded by Eric Lillibridge, Matt Klenz and Blair Myers.
Only two rounds of the 104 played yesterday resulted in under-par scores. However, results dropped with today's final round, as 13 participants posted marks under par.
Santa Clara returns to action next week in Oahu, where it will participate in the Hawaii Invitational. Rounds will be played Monday through Wednesday at Turtle Bay Resort.
