FAIRFAX, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's golf team began their second tournament of the season Monday at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at the Meadow Club in Fairfax. Through the first two rounds of play, Santa Clara is tied for 8th place at even par.

Junior Blair Myers led the team on the first day, and finished tied for fifth place (-5) with an opening round of even par 71 and an even stronger bogey-free second round of 66. Senior Jong Yoon was not far behind, and hung in to finish with rounds of 75 and 68.

The story of the day, though, was the missed opportunities. The team carded very respectable first rounds, and started their second rounds even stronger. At one point, the team was at -15. Junior Kellen Moss was at -5 through the first nine holes of his second round, and freshman Jimmy Cacho was at -3 with only three holes to go. Senior Jong Yoon was only inches away from a hole in one on the par 3 17th. Those stats aside, as the end of round two drew near, things went down hill. Double, triple and quadruple bogeys turned what might have been the best rounds of the day into just average rounds.

Tournament host Cal is at the top of the scoreboard at -25, and has really taken advantage of playing, and even more importantly putting, on their home course. Santa Clara isn't exactly out of the running, though, as they are only eight strokes out of third place, behind San Jose State who sits at -15. The final round begins Tuesday morning at 8:00 a.m.
