SAN MARTIN, Calif - Santa Clara got off to a tough start Monday at the CordeValle Collegiate, but have battled back and are tied for 16th after the first day of competition. Out of the 17 team field, 11 including Santa Clara were unable to finish their second rounds before nightfall. As a result, the teams who still have holes left to play will begin Tuesday at 7:00 a.m., and the final round will be a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m..
Santa Clara faced an uphill battle from the get-go. Santa Clara's contingent, made up of seniors Jong Yoon and Eric Lillibridge, sophomore Garrett Logan and freshmen Alex Bon and Scott Travers began the day on some of the toughest holes on the golf course. The 12th hole is a very long par-3, and the 13th is an uphill par 4.
In the first round, the Broncos were +8 on those first three holes, holes 12-14, but they picked up their games played well the rest of the day to recover. In his first round, freshman Scott Travers bogeyed his first four holes, but had nine consecutive pars after that, and sunk two birdies in his last five holes to finish his first round at +2.
Senior Eric Lillibridge was the Broncos' leader in the first round. Lillibridge started off with a bogey on the 12th, but bounced back with a birdie on 13. Despite another bogey on 14, Lillibridge answered with par on the next six holes. Lillibridge added birdies on 3 and 6 and sunk par the rest of the way. After his first three holes of the day, Lillibridge saved par on every hole the rest of the way, except for those which he birdied.
In the second round, senior Jong Yoon was determined to demonstrate the kind of golf he knew he was capable of playing. Yoon, started on the 11th, sunk two birdies in his first five holes, and didn't miss par until the 18th, his 8th hole of the round. He bounced right back, however with a birdie on the 1st hole, and another on the 3rd. Through 16 holes, Yoon was at -3, the best performance of the day by a Bronco.
But there is still more golf to be played. Most teams failed to finish their second rounds as the absence of daylight-savings time prevented teams from finishing 36 holes before the sun went down.
When play stopped, Stanford held a commanding lead, at -22, eight strokes ahead of the second place team, Lamar University. Stanford was been led by current tournament leader Zach Miller, who shot a second round of 63, -9.
Most players will only have two or three holes to finish before tee-ing off for their final round on Tuesday, November 7th at 8:30 a.m..
