Feb. 6, 2006

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - After helping lead the Santa Clara women's basketball team to a pair of home wins that put it solely in second place in the WCC, senior guard Michelle Cozad was named the conference's Player of the Week for an amazing sixth time this season, the conference office announced Monday.

Cozad averaged 17.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 4.0 steals in big wins over Gonzaga and Portland last weekend, helping extend SCU's season-best winning streak to six games and giving the Broncos a one-game cushion over the third-place Zags.

In the battle for sole possession for second place on Thursday night, Cozad fulfilled her role as a team leader by scoring a team-high 16 points while grabbing five boards, dishing out six assists and posting a career-high seven steals in the 74-52 win.

Saturday the Stockton, Calif. native led all players with 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds in a 67-58 victory over Portland that improved the Broncos' record to 13-9 overall and 7-2 in the West Coast Conference.

On the season, Cozad leads the WCC with 18.0 points a game and 55 three-pointers made. She is also second in the conference in rebounding (9.4 rpg), free-throw percentage (81.8%) and steals (52 total, 2.36/game).

Santa Clara continues conference play this week as the Saint Mary's Gaels come to the Leavey Center in the first match-up of the season between the two schools. The teams will play at the Leavey Center Thursday night at 7 p.m. and tickets are available by calling (408) 554-4660.
