SANTA CLARA, Calif. - As if capping off a long week with an emphatic victory wasn't enough, the Santa Clara women's basketball team earned another notch in their belts Monday as the West Coast Conference announced that Michelle Cozad was named the WCC's Player of the Week.
The Broncos finished last week with a 2-1 mark, ending things with a flourish as they routed the UC Irvine Anteaters 99-71. Cozad paced the team as she averaged 22.3 points and 9.7 rebounds last week, finishing just one rebound short of averaging a double-double on the week. She turned in her first double-double performance of the season Thursday night at Portland State, scoring 22 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
On the year Cozad leads the WCC with 21.0 points per game and 22 three-pointers made, and sits in the conference's top-five in nearly all offensive categories, including second in rebounding (7.8 rpg) and three-point field goal percentage (59.5%) and third in steals with 2.17 per game. Her offensive output is one major reason why the Broncos lead the WCC with 82.3 points per game, a 48.3 shooting percentage, a 51.2 three-point field goal percentage and 110 assists.
"Michelle has definitely been leading our team on the court," said head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "Her performance has been tremendous on both the offensive and defensive sides of the court and she has been one of our most consistent players so far this season."
