Broncos In Third After Day One At WCC Championships

VALLEJO, Calif. - After two rounds at the 2009 West Coast Conference Championships at Hiddenbrooke Golf Course in Vallejo, the Santa Clara Broncos stand in third place. The men's team is tied for third with No. 31 Pepperdine, while the women are in sole possession of third place.

The women's golf team struggled in the first 18 holes, shooting 321 (+17), but rebounded in the second 18 of the day with a 298 (+10). SCU's second round score was just one stroke shy of tying the tournament team low.

Individually, freshman Meaghan Kari leads the team at 8-over 152 (78-74). She is fifth overall. Sophomore Miki Ueoka went from tied for 21st after the first 18 to tied for 8th overall at 10-over 154 (83-71).

Sophomore Katie Sharpe is tied for 15th with a score of 158 (82-76) and freshman Tammy Surtees is tied for 17th at 160 (78-82). Junior Erin Sullivan is 21st overall at 18-over 162 (85-77).

The men are at two-under 574 after posting a first round score of 293 and a second round of 281.

Individually, freshman Cory Mehl is tied for ninth at three-under par 141 (72-69). Junior Jimmy Cacho is right behind him in 11th place at two-under par 142 (73-69).

Junior Alex Bon is third on the team at four-over par 148 (80-68). He posted the best round for the Broncos in the second 18 as he shot a 68. Bon is tied for 25th. Freshman Ronnald Monaco is tied for 28th at five-over par 149 (74-75). Senior Jonathan Keane rounds out the Bronco competitors at 11-over par 155 (74-81). Keane is in 38th place.

The Bronco women open the third and final round of the tournament on Tuesday, April 14 at 8:40 a.m. The Bronco men will begin at 8:10 a.m.
