STANFORD, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team fell to Pacific 4-0 and fifth-ranked Stanford 19-4 in continuing tournament action at the Stanford Classic, hosted by the Cardinal at the Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium. Santa Clara is now 1-4 on the season. Pacific is 1-1 and Stanford is 3-0.
After two scoreless innings in the Tigers' season opener against Santa Clara, Pacific plated three runs in the top of the third inning on short stop Michelle Anunciation's three-run home run. Third baseman Crystal Presson singled home second baseman Lizzie Hagen in the top of the seventh as the Tigers went on to the 4-0 win.
Ashley Blier, Kelley Johnson and Keri Reisinger recorded hits for the Broncos.
Tiger Pitcher Natalie King allowed just three hits and one walk while going the distance for the shutout victory. Freshman Jerrica Castagno took the loss for Santa Clara to fall to 1-2.
Against the Cardinal, Shortstop Lauren Lappin hit two homeruns to lead Stanford over Santa Clara. The 19 runs are the most by Stanford since it scored 21 against Ohio University in 1999. The Cardinal's entire lineup hit in each of the first three innings.
Lappin ended the game going 4-for-4 with six RBIs and four runs scored. Tricia Aggabao went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored while Meghan Sickler also had a 2-for-2 effort at the plate. Pinch hitter Michelle Thiry went 1-for-2 with a homerun as well.
Santa Clara scored all four if its runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, Vanessa Werner reached base on balls and advanced to second on Kate Goethals' single. Jessica Clee followed with an RBI single that brought Werner home. After Stanford recorded the second out, Maggie Godfrey notched her first collegiate homerun to center field, good for three RBIs and a tie ballgame after the first inning.
Meghan Chavez, Werner and Valerie Mock each added hits for the Broncos.
Freshman Becky McCullough (1-0) picked up the win in the circle for Stanford, going three innings with three strikeouts. Danika Dukes was credited with a save, pitching two scoreless innings in relief. Santa Clara's Liz Courter (0-2) took the loss for the Broncos, allowing 13 runs on nine hits over two innings of work.
Santa Clara will close out the weekend with another contest against the Tigers on Sunday at 11 a.m. Santa Clara opens the home season on Wednesday, February 9 when it hosts Bay Area rival San Jose State at Marsalli Park. First pitch of that doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
