STANFORD, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team closed out action at the Stanford Tournament, a fall event hosted by the Cardinal at the Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium. Freshman pitcher Jerrica Castagno threw a no-hitter in leading the Broncos to a 4-0 victory over West Valley College.
Santa Clara followed with a 6-0 loss to Stanford. Angela Kabanuck recorded the Broncos' sole hit in the contest.
"I am pretty happy with how things went at this fall tournament," head coach Jaime Forman-Lau said. "Of course, we always want to win more games, but I thought the freshmen dealt with their first outings very well, and generally speaking, I'm optimistic about our upcoming season, because we have some good material to work with."
Santa Clara, the defending Pacific Coast Softball Champions, will open the 2005 season February 1, visiting San Francisco State for a 1 p.m. contest.
