SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Loyola Marymount pitcher Kayla Meeks threw a one-hitter in lifting the Lions to a 3-0 victory over Santa Clara in Pacific Coast Softball Conference action today at Marsalli Park. LMU went on to win the second game 1-0 and is now 27-15 overall, 9-1 in league action. The Broncos have now lost 10 straight and have been shut out in seven of those outings; their record moves to 20-27, 3-7.
LMU took an early lead with one run in each of the first two frames. An RBI single by third baseman Danielle Kaminaka scored leftfielder Lisa Abbott in the first, who led off with a walk. In the second, Meeks hit a two-out home run that was just inside the left field foul pole for the 2-0 lead.
Meeks threw a no-hitter into the fourth, when Bronco sophomore centerfielder Angela Kabanuck singled to left center for the Broncos' only hit of the contest. The Lions finished with nine hits, including three from Kaminaka.
LMU added a third run in the fifth inning. Catcher Caylin Hornish singled to right to bring home second baseman Margo Pineda, who singled up the middle to reach base.
In the nightcap, second baseman Margo Pineda gave LMU another early lead with her fifth home run of the season with one out in the top of the first. The Lions held on and pitcher Tiffany Pagano earned her 11th victory of the season.
Santa Clara placed a runner in scoring position in the third, but could not capitalize. The Broncos finished with two hits, a single by junior second baseman Jenny Brown in the first, and a double by senior catcher Daisy Mettlach in the second.
Although freshman Jerrica Castagno took the loss for the Broncos, she struck out five in the two-hitter. After Pineda's home run, Castagno retired 17 straight Lions before Pineda struck again with a single to lead off the seventh.
