STANFORD, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team fell to Pacific 3-2 to close tournament action at the Stanford Classic, hosted by the Cardinal at the Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium. Santa Clara is now 1-5 on the season. Pacific is 3-1.
Down 3-0 in the top of the sixth, Santa Clara put two runs on the board to begin a comeback with back-to-back doubles by Kate Goethals and Jessica Clee. Goethals' hit brought home Vanessa Werner, who reached base on a fielder's choice.
Pacific out-hit the Broncos 8-6. Liz Courter took the loss in the circle, pitching four innings, and allowing seven hits and three runs. Jerrica Castagno threw the final two frames.
Werner, Ashley Blier, Shannon Linerud and Courter also added hits for the Broncos.
Pacific scored two runs in the bottom of the second, behind four hits, and followed with another run in the third, off a triple from Lizzie Hagen.
Santa Clara opens the home season on Wednesday when it hosts Bay Area rival San Jose State at Marsalli Park. First pitch of that doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
