Smale Honored With Comcast Award

March 31, 2005

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University junior softball player Lacey Smale was honored recently as the March recipient of the Comcast Community All-Star Award for her commitment to community service.

Keshila Vallot from Comcast presented the award to Smale prior to the softball team's doubleheader on March 30 against Brown University at Marsalli Park in Santa Clara.

Established in January to honor Bronco sports teams and student-athletes who demonstrate outstanding service to the university and local community, the award is presented monthly by Comcast as part of a partnership with SCU Athletics. A permanent plaque resides in Santa Clara's athletic department trophy cases, while a smaller version is presented to each month's recpient.

Smale, the softball team's leading hitter as a freshman in 2002, has been sidelined with a back injury this season. However, the Tujunga, Calif. (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) native is a fixture on the sidelines in helping the team compete for a Pacific Coast Softball Conference title under coach Jaime Forman-Lau. She is considered one of the most supportive student-athletes in the department and attends most home athletic events.

She is involved in a number of activities outside of her sport and studies as a communications major. This winter, Lacey was instrumental in helping organize a women in sports day at a women's basketball game, which helped introduce girls to female student-athletes as positive role models.

The SCU women's golf team received the inaugural honor in January due to its continuing relationship with the Make-A-Wish Foundation's Birdies for Wishes program, benefiting children who are terminally ill. The Bronco women's basketball team was honored in February for its myriad of service projects, including its participation in the "Making Strides against Breast Cancer" 5K walk in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.
