Women’s Tennis Opens Conference Season at No. 40 San Diego on Saturday

Women’s Tennis Opens Conference Season at No. 40 San Diego on Saturday
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis face a pair of ranked opponents this weekend, opening West Coast Conference play at No. 40 San Diego on Saturday before returning home to take on No. 35 Furman on Sunday.

Saturday's first serve is at 11 a.m. on the road and Sunday's at noon from the Degheri Tennis Center.

"Every year we play San Diego and BYU back-to-back if we are at home but this year, those matches are on the road.  And since logistically, we can't play at San Diego and BYU the same weekend, we are playing USD earlier in the season and coupled that with a home match against Furman" said Broncos head coach Ben Cabell.  "Furman is nationally ranked so the opportunity to play them was something we couldn't pass up."

The Broncos (4-3) have won the last three matches, all by sweeps, blanking New Mexico State 7-0 in a neutral site match in Arizona along with back-to-back 4-0 wins at San Jose State and Cal State Fullerton at home.

San Diego (6-4) was the unanimous runner-up pick in the preseason WCC poll and has won five of their last six matches.  Their five-match win streak was snapped by UC Santa Barbara at home last week.  The Toreros are 5-1 at home this season and feature two ranked players in No. 65 Solymar Colling and  No. 109 Elizabeth Goldsmith.

Furman (12-3) will be riding a 10-match winning streak when they visit Degheri Tennis Center on Sunday. Katarina Kozarov is the 16th ranked singles player as the Paladins have two ranked doubles teams in No. 28 Madison Dillon/Julia Adams and No. 36 Katarina Kozarov/Julia Adams.
