Drew Cleary spent four years as the director of sports performance at Santa Clara.

He oversaw all aspects of sports performance for women’s basketball, men’s and women’s rowing, and men’s and women’s soccer. Cleary also directed all facets of data collection from catapult sports tracking systems, implementation of all strength programs, design of conditioning modalities, and flexibility.

Prior to arriving at Santa Clara in 2018, Cleary spent 12 years with the Washington Wizards in the NBA where he was the head strength and conditioning coach from 1999-2001 then returning from 2004-14. He oversaw all aspects of strength and conditioning as well as corrective exercise, STATsport GPS technology, draft workouts and nutrition.

Before his tenure with the Wizards, Cleary was the personal trainer for six-time NBA champion Scottie Pippen, as well as training Hall of Fame tennis player Monica Seles. He also served as an assistant strength coach with the Portland Trailblazers and the Orlando Magic. In addition, he spent two seasons at Tulsa as the director of performance for men’s basketball.

Cleary has a master's of science from Boise State, and a bachelor's of science in kinesiology from Lewis-Clark State College where he played basketball. He is currently working toward a Ph.D in Human Performance from Concordia University Chicago.

The native of Nowra, Australia, is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (CSCS), the National Association of Sports Medicine (CES & PES), Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT), Resistance Training Specialist Mastery (RTSM), American Heart Association (CPR & First Aid).
