With two West Coast Conference coach of the year honors and three-straight second-place finishes in the league championships, Maloney was of the top cross country coaches on the West Coast.
Maloney assumed his position in the fall of 1993 after serving as an assistant coach for six seasons. Since that time, the Broncos have placed fourth or better in the last eight West Coast Conference championships, highlighted by school-best second-place finishes in 1996, 2000 and 2001. The 2000 squad set school team time records at each meet and two individuals combined for six school course records. Maloney was named the WCC Men's Coach of the Year following the 2000 and 2001 league championships.
His teams over the years have featured 12 first team All-WCC selections, 16 WCC honorable mention picks, one conference Freshman of the Year honoree and 16 WCC All-Academic performers. In addition, six of his last eight teams have been recognized by the U.S. Cross Country Coaches Association for its outstanding academic achievement.
Maloney was the fifth head coach in the program's history. While lettering for Santa Clara, he ran for the first three head coaches, Dan Durante (1977-80,82), Larry Eder (1981) and Dan Cruz (1983-84). Under Sam Imelli, the Broncos' first head coach of combined men and women's teams (1985-92), Maloney became a volunteer assistant in 1987. Maloney was promoted to assistant and then head coach under Imelli's guidance. Additionally, Maloney became the third women's cross country coach at SCU in 1993 following Imelli and Dick Forst (1977-84).
Certified by the USA Track and Field Association, Maloney served as the chair of the West Coast Conference Coaches Committee. He also served the West Regional representative on the NCAA Division I Cross Country Coaches Association from 1998-2000. He publishes a conference Athlete of the Week and weekly results for the league coaches. He has been certified as a Level I (1998) and Level II Endurance (1999) USA Track and Field Coach.
In addition to his duties at Santa Clara, Maloney worked at DuPont Photomasks, Inc. in Santa Clara. He has been with the company since 1986 and is currently a Litho Registration Engineer.
Maloney married Liz Cummings at the Santa Clara Mission on January 11, 2003 and the couple resides in Campbell. He is a member of the West San Jose Kiwanis Club and a lector in Saint Christopher's parish.
