Women's Soccer

Gregg Murphy finished his 16th season as Associate Head Coach of the Santa Clara women's soccer program in 2022. He joined the Bronco coaching staff in 2007 after spending 11 seasons as head coach at Loyola Marymount University.

Murphy has done a remarkable job in 16 seasons on the Misson Campus. He helped lead the 2020 team to the program's second National Championship, including a No. 1 ranking in the final United Soccer Coaches poll, and a second straight trip to the College Cup in 2021.

While at LMU, he led the team to a winning record in eight of those campaigns, and to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths, the first two in school history. In 2002, Murphy led the Lions to their first ever postseason appearance, receiving an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament.

During the 2000 season he enjoyed the 100th win of his career against UNLV, and led the Lions to their best-ever finish in conference history (5-2), including a shutout victory against nationally ranked Santa Clara (No. 22). They finished the season ahead of Santa Clara and San Diego in the WCC, both of whom earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In 1999, Murphy led the Lions to a 13-6 mark that included a national ranking at No. 19.

In 1998, the Lions posted their best record ever at 12-2-5, not losing a game at home (6-0-4). In that season, for the first time in LMU women's soccer history, the squad was ranked among national leaders in three different categories (No. 3 in shutouts per game-0.68, No. 9 in team defense-0.58 GAA and No. 23 in winning percentage-76.3).

Murphy is also active on a national level. He served as the assistant coach for the Under-20 National Team, which competed in the 2006 World Championships in Russia. Murphy looks to continue his involvement with the US National team programs.

Murphy's collegiate coaching career began at Chapman, his alma mater, where he became the full-time coach of the women's program in 1990. He gradually built the program into one of the most successful in the region. He guided the team to its first winning season in 1992 and followed with four consecutive winning campaigns. The 1994 squad finished with a 13-6 overall record competing as an NCAA Division III independent, while the 1995 squad posted a school-best 13-5 record and was ranked third in the West Region.

On the men's side, he inherited a struggling program in 1990, but increased its win total each season, capping the program's rise in 1995 with a 17-4-1 record and a trip to the 1995 NCAA Division III Final Four. For his efforts, Murphy was named the 1995 West Region Coach of the Year.

A four-year letterwinner (1981-84) for the Panthers, Murphy was named to Chapman University's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. He earned all-conference honors three times and All-America honors twice. In 1984 he played for the West Regional team and was named an alternate to the U.S. National Universities Team. He remains one of Chapman's all-time leading scorers with 24 goals, 12 assists, and 60 career points. Upon graduation, Murphy played two seasons with the Los Angeles Lazers reserve team of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL).

Murphy holds a USSF National "A" Coaching License. He has worked extensively with the Region IV Olympic Development program and served as a technical advisor for the 1999 Women's World Cup.

Murphy received his bachelor's degree in business management in 1996 from Chapman University. He and his wife, Tina, reside in San Jose with their two sons, Jack and Sean.
