Damon Coupe spent two seasons as Head Coach of the Women's Tennis program. He became the ninth head coach in Santa Clara University's 41-year women's tennis history, when he arrived on the mission campus in July 2004. He inherited a team that went 12-12 in 2003-2004. In his first season, he guided the Bronco's to a 16-7 overall record, and a 5-2 WCC record. The team also received their first-ever national ranking peaking at #70.
"I'm very excited for the opportunity to work at a school that is held in very high regard both academically and athletically," Coupe said. "We have a great group of student-athletes that are committed to improving this program at a rapid pace. I'm looking forward to furthering the success of this program."
Before coming to Santa Clara, Damon spent two seasons (2002-2003, 2003-2004) on the men's tennis coaching staff at Fresno State, where he was a key figure in turning around a team that went 7-16 in 2001-2002 to posting an 18-9 record the following season, peaking at No. 35 in the national rankings and advancing to the NCAA Championship. In 2003-2004, his team reached a season-high ranking of No. 30 in the nation and also advanced to the NCAA Championship. He coached at his alma mater Sacramento State during the 2001-02 season as an assistant and then as an Interim Head Coach for five months. He guided the Hornets to a 12-11 record, 7-1 as Interim Head Coach, a Big Sky Conference Championship and a berth in the NCAA Championship.
A native of Sacramento, Coupe began his collegiate career at San Jose State but returned to his hometown and Sacramento State as a sophomore and played for the Hornets the remainder of his collegiate career. He graduated from Sacramento State in 1997 with a degree in Marketing.
Coupe and his wife Michelle reside in Los Gatos, Calif.
