Women Take Top Three Spots in 5000 Meter Run at Mathis Invitational

SAN FRANCISCO - The Santa Clara outdoor track team took part in the San Francisco State Johnny Mathis Invitational this weekend, with solid results. In the Women's 5000m Run, Santa Clara had the top three finishers. Stephanie Wilson, Danielle Miller, and Noelle Lopez took first, second, and third respectively.

Also of note for the Broncos was Veronica Vazquez who took second in the Women's 1500 Meter Run, and was first for anyone attached to a team. Melissa Conlin placed sixth in the 3000 Meter Run. Anna Wheatley took sixth in the 800 Meter Run and Joanna Gistand placed 13th in the 100 Meter Hurdles.

For the men, Robert Reid took ninth in the 1500 Meter Run with teammates Zachary Bonner (12), Matthew Spear (18), Brian Fisher (22), John Howard (24), and Andy Backus (36) in tow. George Sanchez took 38th in the 200 Meter Dash, followed by Greg Palmer in 43rd. Sanchez also placed 39th in the 100 Meter Dash and Palmer finished in 45th. John Laughlin had a tenth place finish in the 5000 Meter Run along with teammates Daniel Smith in 15th, Ben Snyder in 16th, Christopher Mosier in 19th, and Michael Calcagno in 35th. Garrett Smith placed 17th in the 800 Meter Run and Bonner took 29th.

The next event for the track team is next Saturday, April 19 in Davis, Calif. at the Woody Wilson Invitational.
