Bronco Harriers Have Solid Showing at Stanford Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. - The Santa Clara cross country teams put together a solid performance at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday. The Bronco men finished 13th, while the women posted a 17th-place finish in one of the largest meets on the West Coast this season.

The top-ranked Stanford Cardinal won the women's 4,000-meter race. The Cardinal swept the top three spots with Sarah Bei winning the race in a time of 13:16.

On the men's side, defending Big West Champion Cal Poly posted an upset over second-ranked Stanford. The Mustang men placed three runners in the top ten to earn the win. Cardinal runner Peter Meindl won the race in a time of 23:52.

Five Bronco women placed in the top-100 of the meet. Freshman Ann Thomas was the top finisher for SCU, placing 70th in a 4,000-meter time of 15:37. Senior Robin Bell placed 72nd with a time of 15:38. Three Broncos finished in succession, with Robin Hansen, Lauren Swigart and Blossom Marimpietri finishing 95th, 96th, and 97th, respectively.

For the Bronco men, five different Broncos placed in the top-85, with freshman Michael Delaurenti leading the charge. Continuing his impressive freshman season, Delaurenti finished 46th in an 8,000-meter time of 23:25. John Himnan also placed in the top-50 with a time of 25:46. John Paul Thyken was 56th in a time of 25:52. Freshman Christen Gumbs also continued to impress with a 72nd-place showing, while Chris Doerhoff finished 84th.

Both Bronco programs will return to competition next Saturday at the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Oregon.
