Bronco Harriers to Compete at Cal Poly Invitational

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's and women's cross country teams will travel to San Luis Obispo on Saturday for the VS Athletics/Cal Poly Cross Country Invitational at the Fairbanks Memorial Cross Country Course.

The women's collegiate race will kick-off the competition at 9:00 a.m., with the men starting at 9:30 a.m. Set to compete at Cal Poly on the women's side is15th-ranked UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton, Loyola Marymount, San Jose State, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, Fresno State and the host Mustangs. In the men's field, the 11th-ranked Mustangs headline the field along with Long Beach State, San Jose State, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Fullerton.

Both teams are coming off a bye week after strong showings at the Willamette Invitational in Oregon on October 2. The Bronco women placed seventh out of 18 teams, while the men posted a 10th-place finish in a field of 20 teams.

The Bronco women placed six runners among the meet's top-80 finishers with each runner recording season-best times in the 5K race. Jessica Baldwin-Philippi was the top Bronco finisher for the third time this season. She placed 46th in a time of 18:37. Katie Hansen also set a new season best with a time of 18:48 to finish 52nd at Willamette. Freshman Ann Thomas also continued to impress with a new career-best of 18:54, as she placed 57th.

On the men's side, five Santa Clara runners placed among the top-100 in Oregon. Of those top finishers, four posted season best times on the 8,000-meter course. Freshman Michael Delaurenti placed 57th to lead the Broncos with a time of 25:30. Right behind Delaurenti, junior Chris Doerhoff finished 58th in a time of 25:33. Junior John Hinman also recorded a new season-best with a time of 25:43 to finish 67th.

Directions to Fairbanks Memorial Cross Country Course:

From 101, take the Highway 1 exit toward Morro Bay for approximately five miles. The course is located across from Cuesta College. From Highway 1, turn right on Education Dr. The course will be on the left.
