Saint Mary’s Edges Baseball on 10th Inning Walk-Off Single

Saint Mary’s Edges Baseball on 10th Inning Walk-Off Single
MORAGA, Calif. - Nick Mistone hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning to send Saint Mary's to a 2-1 win over Santa Clara baseball to take the second game of the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.

With one out in the 10th, Kyle Velazquez hit an infield single off Alex Reelfs.  Southpaw Nick Sando came in relief of Reelfs to face left-handed hitter Jacob Talamante who hit a grounder to third baseman Connor Henriques but an errant throw to second base put the runners at first and second setting the stage for Mistone.

Mistone sent the 2-1 pitch from new Bronco reliever Locke Bernhardt to right field that glanced off the glove of Mike Bowest to bring home Velazquez giving Saint Mary's (16-16, 6-8) a win in the first two games of the series.

It was a game of missed opportunities for Santa Clara (12-19, 5-9) which put a runner in scoring position in every inning except the second but could only take advantage of it once.

Following a leadoff home run by Coleman Schmidt in the third to put the Gaels up 1-0, the Broncos answered in the next inning.

Bowes led off the fourth with a double off starter Sam Bower and came home on Tony Boetto's single to knot the game up at 1-all.  Santa Clara finished the game 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position.

Erlandson had an efficient start for the Broncos allowing just the one run and four hits over four innings of work.

Reelfs entered the game to start the fifth and retired the first 10 batters he faced.  In the bottom of the ninth, he escaped a one out, bases loaded jam by inducing Austin Elder into a double play.  The Bronco right-hander threw 5 1/3 innings and scattered two hits, walked two and struck out five but was saddled with the loss on the unearned run in the 10th.

Jackson Hulett (1-0) pitched a scoreless 10th for the win.

Both Velazquez and Bowes had three hits.
