Final Stats

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Sophomore guard Kyle Bailey scored a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Santa Clara University men's basketball team to an 81-73 overtime win over the Olympic Club Tuesday. The game, played at the Compaq Center at San Jose, was the first of two exhibition games for the Broncos prior to its Nov. 17 season opener against Pacific.

Chris McNealy, a former professional player for the New York Knicks, led the Olympic Club with 11 points and 10 rebounds from the center position, while former UC Davis standout Brian O' Connor added 14 points in the loss.

Bailey, a sophomore from Fairbanks, Alaska, scored 19 of his 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the second half and overtime periods, including eight of the team's 12 overtime points. Seniors Jason Westphal and Justin Holbrook added nine points each, while Jason Morrissette and freshman Scott Borchart added eight apiece.

"Tonight's game played out a lot like we wanted it to from the standpoint of getting some minutes for a number of players," said head coach Dick Davey. "Even the overtime really helped that. It was an exhibition game and tonight gave us a good chance to watch our players in live situations. We have room to improve and I expect we will continue to get better as we get some more experience under our belt."

The game was played at the Compaq Center at San Jose, the site of the 2002 NCAA Men's Basketball West Regional that will be hosted by Santa Clara University in March. NCAA hosting requirements mandate the facility host at least one basketball game in the academic year in which it is hosting a regional. The Compaq Center at San Jose did not host another college game, nor an NBA or other contest this year. Thus, the Broncos moved its exhibition opener to the building to provide an operational preview for the regional event.

Santa Clara returns to action Monday, Nov. 12 against Korabel, a club team from the Ukraine. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Leavey Center. Admission is free.
