SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's golf coach John Kennaday was named the West Coast Conference Co-Coach of the Year, the league announced this afternoon at the closing of the conference championships, held today at Windsor Golf Club. He shares the honor with Dick Nicolopulos of San Francisco. Additionally, junior Sandy Horacek was named to the honorable mention All-WCC team.
"I'm very honored to be recognized by my peers with this award," the third-year head coach said. "It's an incredible reflection of my team and our athletic department. And to share the award with Dick is an honor in itself. He has done a phenomenal job at USF and for collegiate men's golf in general."
Horacek's sixth-place finish this afternoon placed the Broncos fourth in the league, the program's fifth top-four finish in the last six seasons. He carded a career-low 71 in the second round and is currently second on the team in stroke average with a 75.68 mark. Horacek has started in each of the 10 tournaments the Broncos have participated in this season.
A touring professional for seven years, Kennaday was a member of the Canadian PGA Tour between 1992 and '94. He was also a member of the 1994 Nike Tour. Additionally, he was a member of the Golden State Tour for six years, between 1988-94.
Before arriving at Santa Clara, Kennaday spent three years as a teaching professional at Mark Dorcak's Complete Golf School in Milpitas, Calif. He has also served as an assistant professional at Spring Valley Golf Course in Milpitas.
Kennaday earned his bachelor's degree in business administration and finance from San Jose State University in 1987. While a Spartan, he earned first team All-PCAA honors in 1986 and '87 and was named an All-American in 1987. Prior to San Jose State, Kennaday spent two years at Monterey Peninsula College, where he was a conference golf MVP in 1984 and `85.
The Broncos return to action this weekend at the U.S. Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday. Both days will begin with 8 a.m. shotgun starts. The tournament covers 54 holes of the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, with 36 holes to be played on Saturday.
