Horacek Qualifies for California State Amateur

May 16, 2001

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior men's golfer Sandy Horacek qualified for the 90th California State Amateur Championship, to be held June 18-23 at both the Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill Golf Courses.

Horacek, a Los Angeles native, advanced to the Amateur by placing fourth in a May 10 qualifier, held at the Southern California Golf Association Members Club in Murrieta. He placed fourth with an even-par 72 on the 6,724-yard course. He was one of 102 golfers vying for seven slots.

A 1999 participant of the Amateur, Horacek said he is looking forward to this year's competition.

"Although I didn't make the cut two years ago, I am not going to be happy with just making it this time," he added. "I want to make a run for the title."

For the Broncos, Horacek was one of three golfers to compete at every tournament this past season. He won the LMU Farmer John Classic during fall play and posted five top-15 finishes en route to a 75.65 stroke average, second on the team. Additionally, Horacek advanced through the second round in last summer's U.S. Amateur Championship.
