SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's golf head coach John Kennaday announced the signing of five players to National Letters of Intent during last month's signing period. The Class of 2005 will be comprised of Kevin Bric, John Colyar, Jonathan Edwards, Matt Klenz and Dallas Stonhaus.
"This group is very exciting to me, as they represent my first full recruiting class," Kennaday said. "Their enthusiasm and work ethic are going to pay off for this program."
Bric is a 5-11 golfer from Manhattan Beach and a four-year letterwinner at Loyola High School. He averaged 76 strokes per round and placed in the top 20 in all his tournaments as a junior en route to All-League Honors.
Colyar is a local product from Saint Francis High School whose father and grandfather also attended Santa Clara. The left-hander is one of the top players in the CCS.
Earlier this fall, Klenz was named Oregon's Junior Player of the Year. From Tualatin High School, the 6-3 right-hander earned medalist honors last summer while qualifying for the U.S. Junior Amateur. He also co-medaled to qualify for Junior Worlds. Additionally, Klenz qualified for the Junior America's Cup and the Hogan Cup. In all, he won six tournaments in 2000 while posting 14 top-three finishes in 25 tournaments and a 70.7 stroke average.
Edwards is a 5-11 golfer from Weiser High School and was a member of Idaho's Junior America's Cup Team this past summer. He was also a member of the 2000 Hogan Cup team and twice earned medalist honors at the State Championships. Additionally, Edwards competed on the soccer and basketball teams at Weiser and has earned numerous academic achievement awards while carrying a 3.9 grade point average.
Stonhaus currently attends Bullard High School in Fresno. He fired a tournament-record 61 in the first round of the Selma Valley Junior Golf Championship this past summer en route to winning the title. He also qualified for the Tournament of Champions, to be held at Pebble Beach on Dec. 26, finishing the summer season with an even-par stroke average.
"With these five players, we are bringing in a group that is sold on the idea that they can be a part of something big," Kennaday said. "Santa Clara has yet to field a team to Nationals--and although we're working toward that with our current team--Kevin, John, Jonathan, Matt and Dallas will be ready to step in next year and either start or continue a successful tradition for Santa Clara men's golf."
