A.J. Kerin Sparks Broncos in 6-1 Loss to No. 2 Waves

April 2, 2006

Malibu, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's tennis team dropped a difficult 6-1 loss this afternoon to No. 2 Pepperdine at the Ralph Strauss Tennis Center in a key West Coast Conference match up. A.J. Kerin won his singles match at the No. 6 spot to prevent the Waves from completing a shutout of the Broncos.

Santa Clara evens its record to 10-10 on the year and the loss to Pepperdine snaps a five-game winning streak in the WCC. Action on the court resumes next weekend for SCU, as they travel to Boise, Ida. to face Idaho, Boise State and Montana State.

"The last two days we competed really well [at Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine]. In today's match, I'm really happy with how the guys competed," said head coach George Husack. "There were definitely some points in the match that were really intense and there was some good tennis out there. This contest will definitely prepare us for our next series of matches next weekend."

Pepperdine lived up to its ranking right from the start, jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead after sweeping all three doubles contests. The Waves' strong play continued in singles, where they captured five out of the six matches. However, the Broncos did not go down without putting up a fight. Kerin was the most successful of the team, taking out Kevin Borzenski 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 6 position to earn SCU's lone point. Tommy Hicks went the distance at the No. 5 spot, but ultimately fell to Omar Altmann 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
