Broncos Fall 4-0 to No. 34 San Diego

April 22, 2006

Moraga, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's tennis team faced a tough team in No. 34 San Diego this morning at the West Coast Conference Men's Tennis Championships and despite the best efforts of the Broncos, dropped a 4-0 decision to the Toreros. The singles matches were contested first, as WCC officials were worried about the weather playing a factor, and head coach George Husack noted that the late change could have hurt his team in the long run against San Diego.

"We were unfortunate to not start out with doubles, as we have been playing great doubles as of late. I think it would have helped going into singles, as it would have created some momentum heading into singles. Performing well in doubles would have helped us going into singles competition, not that we were guaranteed anything," stated Husack. "They made us play and were the better team today. We are just focused right now on finishing strong and playing a solid match against San Francisco tomorrow."

Santa Clara evens its record to 14-14 on the year and returns to finish off the season in the Competitor Final against San Francisco. The winner will place third in the WCC Championships. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.

San Diego proved its national ranking by the strength of its singles players, as all four matches were won in straight sets. Jan Macek dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Pierrick Ysern, last year's NCAA Championship Singles Finalist, at the No. 1 spot, while Kevin McQuaid was beaten by Thomas Liversage 6-2, 6-3 on Court 3. Tommy Hicks lost to Ryo Sekiguchi 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 position, and A.J. Kerin was defeated 6-3, 6-0 by Jonas Mouly at the No. 6 spot. The remaining two matches were abandoned after the fourth point was clinched.
