Second Annual Bronco Invitational Kicks Off

Oct. 7, 2005

Santa Clara, Calif. - Home court advantage can pay off handsomely, as the Santa Clara men's tennis team discovered today in the first day of the Second Annual Bronco Invitational. Playing on its home court at the Dehgeri Tennis Center, the Broncos had four players advance to the quarterfinals of their respective divisions and three teams advance to the quarterfinals in doubles action.

In the Blue Division, Kevin McQuaid, who received a first round bye, advanced to the quarterfinals after his opponent, Andre Sion of Saint Mary's, retired due to an injury. Jan Macek was not as fortunate, as he won his Round of 32 match, but fell to Stanford's Joe Kao, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. In doubles, Macek and Rasmussen won their first two matches of the day easily to reach the quarterfinals.

In the Red Division, No. 3 Brian Brogan and Blane Shields reached the Final 8, while their teammate A.J. Kerin fell in the Round of 16. Both Santa Clara doubles teams in the Red Division, No. 4 Brogan and Kenzo Kirakawa-Wong and Chris Iwamura and A.J. Kerin, managed to claim a spot in the quarterfinals.

Finally, in the White Division, No. 1 Tommy Hicks won both his matches to garner a place in tomorrow's quarterfinal action.

Santa Clara will return to the courts tomorrow, as action will continue with both the main draw and consolation rounds.
