Santa Clara, Calif. - Playing on their own home courts, a trio of Santa Clara tennis players advanced to the Round of 32 at the Wilson/ITA Regional Championships. Sophomore Kevin McQuaid and freshmen Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong and Tommy Hicks all won two matches today to move on to the second day of competition of the prestigious tournament.
In the first round, in addition to the McQuaid, Hirakawa-Wong, and Hicks, A.J. Kerin and Bobby Rasmussen won their matches, though teammates Blane Shields, Brian Brogan, and Chris Iwamura were not as fortunate, falling to their opponents in straight sets. In the following round, Rasmussen and Kerin had their tournament run end, with Rasmussen losing straight sets and Kerin retiring in the third set due to an injury. Jan Macek, seeded No. 9 in the tournament, received a first-round bye, but suffered a straight set loss to dash his tournament hopes.
In doubles action, Kevin McQuaid and Blane Shields won their first round match and will play tomorrow in the Round of 32. The duo of Chris Iwamura and A.J. Kerin was not as fortunate, falling in the first round of play along with teammates Brian Brogan and Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong.
