Men's Water Polo Adds Eight Players

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's water polo has added eight players for the 2020 season. Andrew Carter and Matt Peterson are junior college transfers with Billy Barry, Cody Ferguson, Jack Gannaway, Michael Kreienkamp, Matt McKim, and Bennett Stafford coming from high school. In December, the Broncos added three others.

Carter attended Saddleback College after graduating from Bellevue Senior High School. The Mission Viejo native was a captain at Saddleback in 2019 when he scored 41 goals. Carter was also a captain on the school's swim and dive team.

During high school, he played for Stanford Water Polo Club and Rain City Water Polo Club.

In his free time, Carter enjoys surfing.

Peterson hails from Orinda, Calif. And attended Diablo Valley College after Campolindo High School. At Diablo Valley, the team won its conference and finished fourth in state. Peterson was named the conference's MVP and Norcal all-state.

He was part of the Junior Olympics in 2016 and 2018 when his team finished fifth and eighth.

In 2016 and 2017, his high school finished second in NCS.

Barry is from San Francisco and attended St. Ignatius College Prep. He was a team captain and MVP as a senior when he scored 127 goals to go with 61 assists. In 2017 and 2019 the team were CCS DII champions and in 2019 they won the Norcal DIII championship. Barry was voted most improved on the team in 2018.

He logged more than 300 community service hours during his high school career.

Ferguson hails from Sacramento and attended Jesuit High School, Carmichael. His season year he was a co-captain and team MVP while winning the SJS championship. He was also the SJS DI MVP and named second team all-league as a junior.

Out of the pool, Ferguson enjoys cooking, hiking, camping, and skiing.

Gannaway, from Dana Point, Calif., attended Mater Dei High School and helped lead his team to a California State High School Championships title in 2019. In 2018, he was named the 2018 Orange Lutheran Tournament MVP.

In the classroom, Gannaway was part of the California Scholarship Federation and on the Mater Dei First Honor Roll from 2016-20.

He participated in the Junior Olympics in 2016 with his team finishing third in the platinum division.

Kreienkamp attended St. Louis University High School and is from St. Louis, Mo. He was a team captain as a junior and senior becoming the school's first two-time captain in 60 years of water polo. Both seasons the team won the Varsity Missouri State Championship. As a junior he racked up awards, including All-Metro Player of the Year, Missouri Water Polo Offensive Player of the Year, first team all-state, conference player of the year, and first team all-conference.

He is a three-time USA Water Polo Academic All-American and a member of the National Honors Society and Honors District Orchestra.

In his free time he enjoys playing violin, kayaking, and fishing.

McKim is from San Jose and attended Bellarmine. As a senior, McKim scored 89 goals and added 25 assists, 71 steals, and 40 exclusions drawn en route to being named First Team All-America, First Team All-CIFCCS, and First Team All-WCAL, while finishing as the CIFCCS player of the year runner-up. He won the Billy Schmidt Award as the athlete who best exemplifies the leadership, integrity, and values Bellarmine seeks to instill.

McKim also excelled in the classroom, being named a Cal-Hi Scholar Athlete and a USAWP Outstanding Academic All-American from 2017-20.

He was part of the Olympic Development Program and named an all-star in 2019.

Away from the pool, McKim enjoys surfing and spikeball.

Stafford comes from Healdsburg, Calif. and attended Cardinal Newman High School where he was a team captain as a senior and named the Vine valley Athletic League Player of the Year and was selected to the Pacific Zone North Coast Section All-Star team. As a junior he was named North Coast Section Division 2 Player of the Year, all-league first team, was an ODP selection, and served as the team's captain. In 2017, Stafford was all-section first team and all-league first team. In all, he scored 373 goals with 162 assists and 134 steals.

During his high school run, the team won the Vine Valley Athletic League in 2018 and 2019, won the North Coast Section Division 2 championship in 2018 and were runners-up in 2019.

In the classroom, Stafford was a 2018-19 USA Water Polo Outstanding Academic All-American in addition to being a North Coast Section Student-Athlete all four years and on the Dean's List each semester.

Out of the pool he worked with the nonprofit Clean River Alliance to remove trash from the Russian River.
