Crew Completes Day One at San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's and women's crew competed well on the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic and will compete in the final races Sunday in San Diego's historic Mission Bay.

The women's varsity finished its heat in sixth place in a time of 7:25.76, just eight seconds behind fifth place UCLA. The women's novice team also finished sixth in heat A in the women's novice division in a time of 7:29.93.

Both women's teams will race Sunday morning in the second tier of the competition, with the women's novice team racing at 8:00 a.m., and the women's varsity starting at 9:40 a.m.

On the men's side, the varsity squad finished fourth in heat B of the men's collegiate Cal Cup in a time of 6:24.19, just two seconds behind third place Washington State. Overall, the Broncos had the 12th fastest time of the 19 teams that competed in the three heats.

The men's lightweight boat finished fourth in heat B of the men's collegiate lightweight division in a time of 6:40.07, just five seconds behind heat winner Long Beach State. The men's novice team also finished fourth in heat B of the men's novice division in a time of 6:51.83.

All three men's teams will also race in the second tier of races on Sunday. The men's novice team will race at 8:10 a.m., with the men's lightweight team going at 9:30 a.m. and the men's varsity racing at 9:50 a.m.
