Women's Crew Starts Season With Good Peformance

Nov. 13, 2001

The Santa Clara University women's crew began its 2001-2002 season last Sunday at the Redhead-Head of the Redwood Creek Regatta in Redwood City, Calif. with two good victories in the only two races in which they competed.

First-year head coach Stephanie Shepherd entered only two teams in the Head of the Redwood Creek. She entered the Broncos in the women's Open Four+ and the women's Open Eight+.

In the Open Four+, which was four rowers plus a coxswain, the Broncos finished the course in a time of 24:04.4 which was three minute faster than the next closest competitor and four minutes faster than third place finisher Stanford.

In the Open Eight+ competition, which was eight rowers plus a coxswain, Santa Clara again finished first, this time crossing the line in 20:39.6.

"These two races were really good for us," said Shepherd. "Not only did we get wins in both of them, but we were able to guage where we are and where we would like to be over the next couple of months before our season picks up again."

The Broncos finished their fall season with the Redhead competition and will not be in competition again until February 9. Until then the Broncos will continue to train through the end of the fall quarter, and will resume with team training again as soon as the winter quarter begins.
