Women's Golf, Lending a Helping Hand

Oct. 27, 2001

Santa Clara University's women's golf team is trying to make a difference in the community this year and started today by participating in the National Make a Difference Day.

The Broncos spent their Saturday at the Capitola Mall which was the Santa Cruz County home for the National Make a Difference Day. Head coach Polly Schulze and her team spent the day in a booth where they volunteer their time making "Wishing Stars."

The stars will each have the name of a needy child and their wishes for things that their family cannot afford to get them for Christmas. These stars are then hung on Christmas trees in various local banks. Community members take stars from the trees and then provide the child with the item they wished for.

"It is a great way for our athletes to take part in brightening a childs day," said Schulze. "We will be looking for other opportunities to make a difference throughout the year in hopes that we will help those in need. It is so important in these times that we contribute whenever we can and sometimes just your time is the most valuable gift you can give."

Schulze and her team have already agreed to participated in the Birdies for Wishes program for the Make A Wish Foundation. The Broncos hope to get financial committments from people that will contribute a certain amount of money for every birdie the Broncos record this year. All of the funds will benefit the Make A Wish Foundation.
