Women's Golf to Open Spring Play

Feb. 20, 2005

The Santa Clara University women's golf team will open the spring season on Monday with participation in the ninth annual Bay Area Classic, co-hosted by the University of San Francisco and San Jose State University. Play will take place at The Golf Club at Boulder Ridge in San Jose Monday and Tuesday.

Boulder Ridge, designed by world-renowned golf architect Brad Benz, is the newest private golf course in the Bay Area, and is the home course of LPGA player Christina Kim of San Jose and PGA player John Ellis. Champions Tour player and NBC golf analyst Roger Maltbie is a frequent player. The par-72 course will play at 6,095 yards for the event. For details on this course, please visit www.boulderridgegolf.com.

The 2005 edition of the Bay Area Classic boasts a solid field, highlighted by four teams ranked in GolfWeek's national top 50: No. 36 UC Irvine, No. 42 BYU, No. 45 San Francisco and No. 48 San Jose State. Fresno State's Laura Luethke is the top-ranked player in the field, rated 57th.

The tournament field also includes Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Fresno State, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Mississippi, Notre Dame de Namur, Portland State, San Diego State and Santa Clara. Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. on Monday and at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

Last season Washington captured its second team title with a 629 (312, 317) on a stormy course, while San Jose State's Ashley Gomes won medalist honors after firing a 152 (80, 72). San Francisco placed third last season for the second straight year, while San Jose State finished fifth.

Two-time champion California owns the tournament single round (284) and overall (582) records en route to the 2002 title (298, 284). Two-time medalist Kelli Kamimura owns the individual tournament low after shooting a six-under 138 (69, 69) for Washington in 2001. Kamimura also holds the single-round record after firing a five-under 67 in 1999.
