The Santa Clara University women's golf team placed 12th at the Kent Youel Invitational, hosted by the University of Hawaii at the Kapolei Golf Course in Oahu. Junior Samantha Trask placed 31st with a 77 in today's round for a two-day total of 227.

Santa Clara carded a 317 in the third and final round to finish with a 942 total, 78 strokes over par. The result marked a 12-stroke improvement over the team's last outing.

"We didn't get the finish we wanted place-wise today, but we're playing some tough teams that are ranked much higher than us, so I do think we played well against them," head coach Polly Schulze explained. "From our perspective, this tournament was a success; we're making some headway by carding more scores in the 70s and getting some of our freshmen's feet wet with tournament play."

Third-ranked UCLA won after posting a five-under 859 team total. The Bruins bested ninth-ranked Arizona State by 19 strokes. Oklahoma, Oregon and UC Irvine rounded out the top five in the high-quality 15-team field.

Trask was followed by Courtney Dimpel-Composti, who carded a 79 today and placed 39th with a 14-over 230. Candice Palmer also posted a 79 in today's final round, and tied for 59th.

UCLA swept the top three spots in the individual competition. Amie Cochran earned medalist honors with a four-under, besting teammate Susie Mathews by one stroke. Tuesday's leader, Charlotte Mayorkas, placed third at two-under. Alissa Kuczka of Arizona State was the only other golfer to record a tournament total under par, finishing her rounds one-under.

On a side note, Jenny Nelson recorded an eagle on the ninth hole in yesterday's competition, knocking her shot in from about 140 yards. A freshmen competiting in only her second collegiate tournament, Nelson's father was on hand to witness the accomplishment.

Santa Clara has one more tournament scheduled for the fall: the Cal Poly Invitational in San Luis Obispo, Calif., Nov. 8-9.
