SALINAS, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's golf team is currently in 14th place after two rounds of the Spartan Classic, hosted by San Jose State at Corral de Tierra Country Club in Salinas. The Broncos posted a 323-328--651 in today's action.
In the first round, the squad was led by Samantha Trask, who was tied for 17th with a four-over 75. Candice Palmer carded an 80 for 60th place, and teammates Jenny Nelson and Corey Utsurogi were tied with each other at 13-over 84. Stephanie Cope rounded out the Bronco scorecard with an 85.
Second-round action followed immediately, and Trask, Palmer and Utsurogi each carded 81s. Trask is now tied for 51st at 156, Palmer is tied for 63rd at 161 and Utsurogi is in 70th with a 165. Nelson came in with an 85 and is now in 72nd place with a 169 and Cope is one place back with a 175.
Sixth-ranked UCLA, the defending national champions, improved their second round by 17 strokes to move from fifth to first at 579, and holds a one-stroke lead over fifth-ranked Washington. No. 38 California is six strokes off the lead for third, and first-round leader UNLV, ranked 34th nationally, is in fourth with a 586. No. 28 UC Irvine rounds out the top five, and host No. 55 San Jose State is in 10th. WCC opponent and 37th-ranked San Francisco is in seventh, with a 606.
"This is our first time in this tournament, and we're playing against a strong field with many teams ranked nationally," head coach Polly Schulze explained. "We're playing three freshmen, so we're learning a lot of good lessons and gaining experience that will make us better through the spring season and further in the long run."
The Bears' Sophie Andersson leads the tournament by five shots over the Rebels' Elena Kurokawa. Andersson shot 68-67--135 and made seven birdies. Kurokawa carded a 67 and 73 and finished the day with nine birdies. They were the only two golfers to finish today's rounds under par.
The third and final round begins Wednesday morning at 8 a.m., with teams teeing off on the first and 10th holes every nine minutes.
