SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team fell twice to Cal Poly in an evening double header at Bob Jansen Field in San Luis Obispo. The first game resulted in a 3-2 score after nine innings, that was then followed by a 2-1 decision.
The Broncos, now 14-23 on the season, will return home for a five-game homestand, beginning with Portland State at noon on April 7. Cal Poly improves to 18-12 on the year.
Tied at two heading into the bottom of the ninth, Cal Poly second baseman Kasey Poet singled in Gemma Dalena for the gamewinner. The centerfielder reached base on balls and advanced into scoring position off a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch.
The game was scoreless through the first three innings, but the Mustangs posted one run in the fourth. Santa Clara countered in the sixth when junior Kristi Harrington hit a two-out single and then stole second. A fielding error allowed the junior third baseman a chance to tie the ballgame.
Cal Poly recovered and added a run in the bottom of the inning when leadoff hitter Roni Sparrey earned an RBI with a triple that brought home pinch runner Chelsy Stoufer. Santa Clara kept the offense going with a score its next chance at the plate, with sophomore Rachel Sherman's home run, her second of the year.
In the second game, the Broncos struck first, when freshman Keri Reisinger stole home. Cal Poly was charged with two errors in the inning.
The Mustangs struck back, with a double by Sparrey that brought in Joni Colburn. Cal Poly capped scoring with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh.
