May 10, 2002

Box Score

MORAGA, Calif. - The Loyola Marymount Lions (34-33) defeated the Santa Clara Broncos (21-37) 2-1 in the first game of the 2002 Western Intercollegiate Softball League (WISL) Tournament, which is being played at Cottrell Field on the campus of Saint Mary's College. In the second game of the day, Santa Clara responded to defeat the San Diego Toreros (14-37) 2-0.

"I felt in both games we put ourselves in position to score runs but really couldn't get over the hump," said SCU head coach Marcy Crouch. "Against San Diego we had some clutch hitting and we manufactured enough runs to win the game. We also had a great pitching performance from Deanna Rodriguez and a solid defensive effort from Rachel Sherman and Keri Reisinger. Overall, I was pleased with the way we battled in both games and I hope that gives us some confidence heading into tomorrow's games."

In game one, LMU scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out, two RBI single to left field by Emily Foltz, to take a 2-1 win over Santa Clara. The Lions improved to 2-1 in WISL Tournament action. Winning pitcher Jennifer Heliotes made the two runs stand up as she tossed a complete game six-hitter while striking out five batters. Heliotes, who improved her record to 18-15, allowed an unearned run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Santa Clara's Kristi Harrington. Suffering the loss for the Broncos was Jennifer Ponzo, who falls to 6-13 on the season. Ponzo pitch the entire game allowing two unearned runs on five hits.

The second game of the day saw Santa Clara take a 2-0 win over San Diego. Deanna Rodriguez pitched a six-hit shutout to improve her record to 11-14 on the season. The Broncos did all their scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning. Santa Clara scored two unearned runs in the inning to move to 1-3 in the tournament. Picking up the loss for San Diego was Anna Russell, who pitched six innings allowing two hits while striking out five batters. San Diego is now 1-2 in WISL Tournament action.
