Stanford, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball used a balanced offensive attack to win their second game of the Stanford Invitational this morning, taking out Drake by a score of 8-2. Ashley Blier, Jenny Brown, and Angela Kabanuck each tallied two hits apiece to lead the Bronco offense, while pitcher Jerrica Castagno went the distance to pick up her second win of the season.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third, when Santa Clara's bats heated up, posting six runs thanks to a timely double by Jackie Morales. The inning got started off with Brown getting on base due to a walk. Jessica Clee followed her on base after getting hit by a pitch and Shannon Linerud loaded the bases with a single. Blier knocked in the Broncos' first run with a single, scoring Brown. Bulldog pitcher Jessica Hicks then walked Maggie Godfrey, scoring Clee and loading the bases once again. Jackie Morales then unleashed a double that scored both Blier and Linerud. Valerie Mock then singled that enabled both Morales and Godfrey to reach home plate. Nori Kamada grounded out to shortstop to end the inning, but the damage had already been done.
In the top of the fourth inning, Drake cut the lead to four after scoring two runs of their own, but Santa Clara added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win.
Castagno is now 2-2 on the year, Jessica Hicks (1-3) picked up the loss for her team.
Santa Clara improves its record to 4-3 on the year and returns to action later today when it takes on fellow Pacific Coast Softball Conference rival Sacramento State.
