Box Score

Los Angeles, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball team concluded the Stacy Winsberg Tournament by playing host and No. 3 UCLA Sunday afternoon at Easton Stadium and the one-two pitching combo of Lisa Dodd and Anjelica Selden proved to be too big of an obstacle to overcome, as the Broncos fell to the Bruins 8-2 and 8-1 in a doubleheader. Angela Kabanuck was the leading hitter for SCU with three hits on the day, including a double in the second contest.

In the first game, the Bruins were able to start off strongly, scoring a combined 6 runs in the first three innings, while limiting the Broncos to only one hit during the same time frame. It wasn't until the fourth inning where Santa Clara was able to muster any type of offensive attack. With runners at second and third and two outs, Angela Kabanuck stepped up to the plate and promptly blasted a double to send Jenny Brown and Jessica Clee home to cut the score to 6-2. However, UCLA was able to add two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away. Sara Overmier (2-2) took the loss while pitching two and two thirds innings, while Dodd (8-0) continued her unbeaten streak and picked up her eighth win of the year. Jerrica Castagno took over for Overmier and pitched the rest of the game, striking out six.

The second game began much like the first with the Bruins taking a large lead before the Broncos could respond. It was 4-0 before Santa Clara scored a run in the fourth inning. Behind the strong arm of Selden, UCLA was able to limit SCU to only three hits in the game, while producing nine themselves. Liz Courter (0-3) picked up the loss, striking out two batters while playing the entire game, while Selden (11-1) fanned 12 batters to earn the victory.

Santa Clara drops its record to 7-11 on the year and returns to action next Thursday when Arizona State visits Marsalli Park. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
