Los Angeles, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball team got off to a great start to the weekend, with a 7-0 victory over San Jose State in the second game of a doubleheader at the Stacy Winsberg Tournament, hosted by No. 3 UCLA.

The first game, slated to begin at 10 a.m. this morning, was cancelled due to inclement weather, but the second one went off without a hitch. The Broncos scattered 10 hits in seven innings, with Jessica Clee leading the way with three hits on the afternoon. Angela Kabanuck and Shannon Linerud added two hits apiece, with Linerud connecting for her first homerun of the season.

Santa Clara got on board right off the bat, as it scored two runs in the first inning thanks to a single by Ashley Blier that scored both Jenny Brown and Clee. Three innings later, Jackie Morales hit a punched a single to left centerfield that enabled Kabanuck to score from second base. Morales than advanced to second base after a wild pitch with Noelani Hoopii up at bat. Hoopii then promptly singled off of a bunt, allowing Morales to cross home plate safely. Three more insurance runs were added in the seventh inning, highlighted by Linerud's homerun to left field.

Pitcher Jerrica Castagno (3-4) picked up the victory in the circle, while Kelly Harrison (1-5) took the loss.

Santa Clara improves its 2006 record to 6-8 and returns to action tomorrow afternoon at the Stacy Winsberg Tournament with a doubleheader with Cal Poly. Game time is set for 3 and 5:30 p.m.
