Broncos Fall in Home-Opening Double Header

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Opening its home schedule, Santa Clara softball dropped both ends of a double header to Iowa State 3-1 and Sacramento State 3-1. The Broncos are now 0-7 on the season. The Broncos return to the field Sun., Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. vs. Iowa State.

"Briana pitched a great game in the second game of the day and Jessica pitched well in the first game," said Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize. "We could limit out walks but overall our pitchers did a good job. Offensively we need to get out bats going. We've got to get our timely hitting going as well."

Game 1

Jessica Turner (0-4) made the start for Santa Clara and picked up a loss in the complete game. Turner allowed three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Stephanie Fisher led the offense with two hits in four at-bats. Kelly Scribner was 1-3 while Krista Jensen was 2-3.

Katie Johnson (9-1) started for Iowa State and got the complete game win. Johnson allowed one unearned run on seven hits with seven strikeouts. Sara Davison led the offense by going 2-2 with two walks and a run scored. Aly Cappaert was 1-3 with a walk and two RBI while Sara Rice was 1-3 with a RBI.

Iowa State used a two out rally in the top of the first to get on the board. Davison doubled to right center and Cappaert followed it up with a RBI double to left center to make the score 1-0. Turner came back with a strikeout to end the inning.

Brittany Gomez led off the top of the third with a four-pitch walk and Sarah Hawryluk followed with a bunt single to third. Davison and Cappaert followed with walks to force in the second run of the game. Rachel Hartman hit a grounder to third for a 5-2-1 double play but Lexi Slater reloaded the bases with a walk.  Turner got a pop up to short to escape the inning with the score 2-0.

Santa Clara got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on two errors by Iowa State third baseman Rice. Pinch hitter Rochelle Rivera reached second on a wild throw to first by Rice and Fisher hit a groundball right through her legs to bring in the run.

The Cyclones got the run back in the top of the sixth on a pair of hits. Slater singled up the middle but was erased when she was hit with a groundball by Jordan Spendlove. Rice followed with a hard hit RBI double down the left field line to make the score 3-1. Fisher ended the inning with a diving catch in left field on a line drive that would have brought in another run.

Scribner started the home half of the sixth with a single through the right side. Pinch-hitter Amanda Delfino followed with a bunt single and Gianetta France followed with a single to left but the runner was gunned down at the plate for the first out of the inning . Chiara Biagini hit what looked to be a sacrifice fly but on the appeal the umpire ruled that Delfino left early and the run was erased and the inning ended.

Jensen singled with one down in the bottom of the seventh and Fisher singled with two down to put the tying run on base. Jordan Newell went down swinging to end the game and give Iowa State the win.

Game 2

Briana Rios (0-2) started for Santa Clara and got the loss in 6.2 innings. Rios allowed three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Jensen led the offense with two hits, including a double. Fisher was 2-3 with a double while Biagini was 1-2.

Caitlin Brooks (1-3) started for Sacramento State and got the complete game win. Brooks allowed one unearned run on five hits and had nine strikeouts. Alexa Chattleton was 1-4 with a run scored and a RBI to lead the offense. Nicole Clark and Kourtney Solis each added an RBI.

The Broncos got a rally going with one out in the bottom of the second. Fisher hit a dribbler in front of the plate for a single and Biagini followed with a single over the head of the third baseman. Brooks came back with a strikeout and a groundball to get out of the inning.

Sacramento State got a rally going in the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles. Paris Prado singled and Paige Martin followed with a single to right to put runners on the corners. Yesenia Alcala grounded out to first but the run was unable to score. Rios got a strikeout for the second out and a fly ball to left to escape the jam.

The Hornets threatened again in the top of the sixth when Solis and Sasha Margulies hit back-to-back singles with one out. A fielder's choice put runners on the corners but Rios got a pop up to short to end the inning.

Jensen got things going in the home half of the sixth with a double to left field. She moved to third on a groundout but Newell went down on strikes for the second out. Scribner grounded out to third to send the game to the seventh still scoreless.

Alcala doubled down the left field line with one out in the top of the seventh to put the go ahead run in scoring position. A walk put two runners on for the top of the Hornets' order and Chattleton singled to center to break the tie. Clark followed with an RBI single to left that put runners on the corners with still just one out. Solis brought in the third run with a sac fly to right before Ciara Gonzales came in to get the final out.

Fisher doubled to center and moved to third on an error with one down in the bottom of the seventh. Biagini was hit by a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate for the Broncos. Geenamarie Bonilla grounded into a fielder's choice to bring in a run
