Broncos Win Big vs. Stony Brook in Game One of Doubleheader

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – On the second day at the Cal Poly Mustang Classic, Santa Clara softball split a double header for the second straight day. Santa Clara beat Stony Brook 9-1 in six innings before falling to Fairleigh Dickinson 9-1 in five innings. The Broncos are now 3-13 on the season.

Santa Clara returns to the field tomorrow to wrap-up the Cal Poly Mustang Classic at 11:30 a.m. vs. Cal Poly.

Game 1

Ciara Gonzales (1-3) started for Santa Clara and picked up a win in a 6.0 inning complete game. Gonzales allowed one run on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Kelly Scribner was 3-4 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored to lead the offense. Rochelle Rivera was 3-4 with three runs scored and a RBI while Geenamarie Bonilla was 1-3 with three RBI and one run scored.

Jane Sallen (1-2) started for Stony Brook and picked up a loss in 2.1 innings. Sallen allowed six runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout. Shayla Giosia was 1-3 with an RBI to lead the offense. Olivia Mintun was 1-3 with a run scored as well.

In the bottom of the first Taylor Bojorquez led off with a walk and Rivera laid down a bunt single. Both runners moved up on a ground out and came in to score on a single through the right side by Bonilla.

Stony Brook scored in the top of the third but Santa Clara answered with four in the bottom of the inning. Bojorquez led off the inning with a single to left and Rivera singled through the left side. Scribner hit an RBI single down the right field line that put runners on the corners with no outs. Bonilla reached on a fielder's choice to bring in another run and a sac bunt by Krista Jensen put two runners in scoring position. Stephanie Fisher knocked in both runs with a double to left field to make the score 6-1 Broncos.

In the bottom of the sixth, Cassandra Padilla singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder. Rivera smacked an RBI single to left with one out and Scribner blasted a two-run homer to left center to end the game.

Game 2

Gonzales (1-4) started for Santa Clara and picked up a loss in 2.1 innings. Gonzales allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits. Chiara Biagini was 1-2 with a home run to lead the offense. Bonilla and Fisher each added one hit.

Madison Lerma (1-0) started for Fairleigh Dickinson and picked up a win in a 5.0 inning complete game. Lerma allowed one run on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Cindy Zamudio was 2-3 with a double, three RBI and a run scored to lead the offense. Madelaine Wilen was 1-4 with two runs scored and a RBI while Angelique Nieves was 1-2 with two runs scored and a RBI.

The Knights put up six runs in the top of the third. The first three batters reached on singles and after a groundout, a double knocked in the third run of the inning. Jessica Turner came in to pitch for Santa Clara and retired the first batter but the next hitter reached on an error to extend the inning. After a double steal brought in another run, Lerma doubled to left center to make the score 5-0. Fairleigh Dickinson would add one more run before Santa Clara got out of the inning.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, Brianna Rios came in to pitch for the Broncos but Zamudio cleared the bases with a double to left field that made the score 9-0.

Biagini led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run but the next three Broncos went down in order to end the game.
